Medal Haul at Champs

Mar 10, 2020, 00:00 AM by St Peter's Swimming Club
Last weekend the St Peter’s Swimming Club team of 35 swimmers, including 14 students from St Peter’s, headed to Te Rapa to race in the Waikato Championships.

Swimming medal winners from Waikato Championships

The meet hosted 237 swimmers from all over the North Island vying for both Age Group and Open medals. St Peter’s Swimming Club came away from the weekend with a total of 48 Gold, 42 Silver, and 30 Bronze Age Group medals and 7 Gold, 7 Silver, and 6 Bronze Open medals. This was a fantastic result for the swimmers as many of them are in the final preparation phase of training before heading to their National Championships over the next few months.

From the St Peter’s students, Tyler Tapper continued his winning form from the School Swimming Championships winning a Gold, Silver, and Bronze in the Open age group including a Gold in the 200m Medley.

Savanna Bourke picked up 8 Gold age group medals and 2 Silver medals while also qualifying another race for the NZ Open Championships.

Danielle Joblin secured her Gold Medals in both the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle age group events as well as a Silver and Bronze in the Open events.

Tyrone Herring in his first Waikato Championship Meet racing for St Peter’s picked up Personal Best times in all his four races.

Harvey Williams, Jade Houston and Chelsea Lomas showed their training is paying off with all three picking up medals in their favoured backstroke.

Our youngest swimmer on the team for the weekend was Keana Woodfield who won a handful of medals including a fantastic personal best time and a Silver medal in the 50m Freestyle.

Spencer Cleland, Ainsley Price, Amelia Sharp, Maia Williams, and Issy Wilson all had fantastic races picking up a mixture of personal best times and medals.

As well as the team that raced over the three-day meet, Sonya Price further challenged her Open Water Swimming goals by racing in the 4.8km Open Water race across Lake Taupo before racing on the final day of the championship meet. Sonya finished 2nd for her age group and 5th overall.

Overall a very successful weekend for the whole St Peter’s team who are all now back in the water training towards the NZ Open Championships, NZ Age Group Championships, and NZ Division 2 Championships. A special thank you to all the volunteers who helped at the Championship meet as well as the team coaches Alison Fitch and Clive Power.
